The Ozolini Meditation Quarters is located in a quiet forest in Latvia. It serves as a place for meditation and reflection, designed to promote mindfulness and simplicity. The building draws on traditional Latvian architecture, focusing on minimalistic forms that connect deeply with the surrounding environment. The design allows users to immerse themselves in nature, encouraging a pause from everyday distractions.

Materiality

The design incorporates thoughtful materials that relate closely to the natural setting. Corten steel is chosen for its durability and ability to resist corrosion. Over time, it develops a unique patina that blends well with the landscape. Charred wood is also used, valued for its fire-resistant qualities. This choice not only ensures longevity but adds a warm and textured appearance that complements the surrounding trees.

Spatial Organization

The layout inside the quarters promotes a strong connection with the outdoors. Large openings throughout the building let in plenty of natural light, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere. These openings also provide views of the forest, allowing occupants to feel engaged with nature. Spaces are clearly defined for different activities, such as meditation and living, while still maintaining a sense of flow and connectivity.

Elevated Structure

A key feature of the design is the elevation of the structure above the ground. This decision helps to reduce the ecological footprint and protects the natural landscape below. Raising the building mimics the height of the nearby trees, creating an environment where nature is constantly visible. This elevation also allows for better airflow and natural drainage, contributing to the project's sustainability.

As visitors walk through the quarters, they encounter large windows framing beautiful views of the forest. The design encourages moments of stillness and contemplation, inviting occupants to pause and reflect. The balance of materials, layout, and nature works together to create a peaceful and grounding experience.
