Utilizing charred wood and polycarbonate panels, the design creates a sustainable rest stop that enhances the cycling experience while integrating seamlessly with the natural landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes Shou Sugi Ban technique on exterior wood for enhanced durability and low maintenance.
02
Incorporates large polycarbonate panels to maximize natural light while maintaining energy efficiency.
03
Features a bent A-frame design that reflects the contours of the surrounding landscape.
04
Includes dedicated zones for bike maintenance and social interaction among cyclists.
05
Employs locally sourced materials to reinforce environmental sustainability and regional character.

The project is an architectural design for a rest stop located along the Euro Velo 6 cycling path. This facility serves as a functional space for cyclists to rest and recharge while integrating harmoniously with its natural surroundings. The design reflects a deep respect for the landscape and the river, emphasizing connectivity and sustainability. It comprises varied multifunctional spaces equipped for resting, bike maintenance, and social interaction.

The project’s architectural form mimics the sinuous flow of the river, creating a unified relationship between structure and nature. The design employs a series of angular, triangular shapes that echo the geographical features of nearby riverbanks and valleys. The elevations of the structure emphasize verticality, allowing for drainage and resilience against weather conditions.

Unique Design Approaches

The "Reverent" rest stop distinguishes itself through its innovative use of materials and form. The exterior features Shou Sugi Ban, a charred wood technique that enhances durability and reduces maintenance needs. Utilizing locally sourced materials, such as recycled wood species for framing and Birch plywood for interior finishes, reinforces the project's commitment to environmental sustainability. Polycarbonate panels further enhance the building's energy efficiency and provide ample daylight within the communal spaces.

The design integrates solar panels within its architectural layout, allowing the facility to generate its own power for essential services, such as electrical charging stations for bicycles. This level of self-sufficiency aligns with the growing trend in sustainable architecture.

Functional Design Elements

The layout of the rest stop is carefully considered to accommodate the diverse needs of travelers. It includes various areas designated for cyclists, such as maintenance zones equipped with tools and workspaces, sheltered seating areas for relaxation, and shaded zones for social interaction. The space is designed to facilitate easy movement, allowing visitors to navigate seamlessly between different functionalities.

Architectural sections within the project reveal the interplay of light and space, further reinforcing the connection between the interior and exterior environments. By utilizing a modular approach, the design can be replicated or adapted for placement in different locations along the Euro Velo 6 route, ensuring a cohesive architectural identity across various sites.

For further insights into the project’s detailed architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural ideas, we invite you to explore the comprehensive presentation of the "Reverent" rest stop.
