A Room in Between is located in the natural landscapes of New Zealand, functioning as a space for meditation and the production of flower essences. The design focuses on the relationship between light and dark, creating areas that provide different experiences. This contrast not only serves to enhance the user's connection to the environment but also establishes a unique dialogue between external nature and internal contemplation.

Conceptual Framework

The project balances vertical and horizontal forms. A slender tower rises above the forest, acting as a visual reference point in the surroundings. This vertical structure captures sunlight, while horizontal elements sink into the ground to promote a calm atmosphere. Combining these features allows for a thoughtful exploration of light and shadow, providing tailored experiences in each area of the building.

Spatial Organization

The design includes two main spaces: the room of lightness and the room of darkness. The room of lightness is dedicated to the production of flower essences. It has high ceilings that allow for ample sunlight, facilitating productive tasks. Positioned to the north, this area encourages interaction with the outdoors, where light plays a key role in flower preparation.

In contrast, the room of darkness is intended for meditation. This space is designed to be low and sunken, which helps to soften incoming light. This creates a calm setting that is ideal for reflection and withdrawal from the outside world, offering a peaceful retreat for users.

Material Consideration

Materials chosen for the project consist of charred timber for the tower’s exterior, providing both durability and a connection to the landscape. Plywood is used for benches and workstations, contributing to a functional yet simple aesthetic that aligns with the overall design. These materials support the theme of light and dark, creating a cohesive experience throughout the space.

A winding path leads visitors down the hill towards the tower, offering a gradual transition from the surrounding woods. As visitors approach, the tower reveals itself as a display cabinet filled with flowers floating in water. This distinctive feature captures light and creates interesting reflections on the ply-lined ceiling, fostering an engaging atmosphere that connects the interior with the dynamic landscape outside.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
