Charred Timber Monolith Emphasizing Meditative Experience in Secluded Retreat

Project in-detail

A charred timber monolith emerges from the native bush, providing a serene space for meditation and reflection, thoughtfully designed to enhance the connection between occupants and their natural surroundings.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred timber exterior enhances durability and visual texture.
02
Cross-laminated timber provides structural integrity and warmth.
03
The design incorporates a continuous void for immersive nature engagement.
04
Elevated platform allows for unobtrusive views of the surrounding bush.
05
Custom ply cabinet serves dual functions as storage and altar.

The Earth Energies Sanctuary is a wellness retreat located on the edge of the Hauraki Plains in New Zealand. It is set amidst native bush and serves as a space for meditation and spiritual wellness. The design draws inspiration from the form of a camera, which symbolizes capturing moments and encourages visitors to connect with their surroundings.

Architecture and Environment
The cabin is placed in a secluded area and appears solid from a distance. When approached, visitors find an entrance that leads to a continuous void extending into the landscape. This design invites contemplation and helps create a peaceful atmosphere, allowing for a deeper engagement with nature.

Spatial Configuration
Inside, the cabin is arranged to guide visitors toward an elevated platform that serves as a spot for meditation. This elevation enhances the overall experience by allowing users to take in the environment’s sounds and sights. At the entry, a custom ply cabinet holds meditation supplies and acts as an altar, enhancing the functionality of the space.

Materiality and Construction
The structure uses two notable materials: charred timber and exposed cross laminated timber (CLT). The charred timber, treated using the shou sugi ban method, offers an appealing look while protecting against moisture and insects. The interior features exposed CLT, which provides warmth and structural support, creating a connection between inside and out.

Sensory Experience
As night falls, the cabin becomes a different space. Natural darkness brings awareness to other senses. Soft light from a fire stove and lanterns creates a cozy atmosphere suited for quiet reflection. The design emphasizes a relationship between the structure and the surrounding nature, highlighting a sense of calm and mindfulness.
