The Vogafjós Greenhouse Restaurant is located in the distinctive landscape of Iceland. It serves a dual purpose: providing dining experiences and educating visitors about agriculture. The design emphasizes the plant-to-plate philosophy, connecting diners directly with the source of their food. Greenhouses are centrally placed between the restaurant and a multipurpose hall, creating visibility of the cultivation process. This design approach reinforces the idea of transparency in food sourcing.

Architectural Layout

The layout of the restaurant and multipurpose hall highlights the significance of fresh produce. By placing the greenhouses between these two spaces, the design draws attention to the role of agriculture in enhancing the dining experience. The restaurant is oriented to face natural springs, allowing visitors to engage with the surrounding environment. This orientation fosters a sensory experience that complements the meals served.

Materiality and Aesthetics

Material choices reflect a strong connection to the local landscape. The exterior features charred timber cladding and stained poplar timber, which echo the tones of the nearby lava fields. These materials create a warm and inviting façade that ties the structure to its surroundings. Low iron glazing and galvanized steel add to an open feel within the spaces. The use of ETFE panels in the greenhouses brings in sunlight for plant growth, providing a visual contrast to the timber elements.

Internal Design Elements

Inside the restaurant, a carefully selected range of materials contributes to a pleasant dining environment. Sandstone floor tiles, reclaimed brick flooring, cold-rolled steel, and reeded glass work together to create a cohesive atmosphere. Each material enhances the overall ambiance, offering an inviting setting. The choice of locally sourced materials supports the goal of sustainability while enriching the dining experience.

Modular Configuration

The design includes equal-size greenhouse modules, enabling adaptability and potential future expansion. This modular approach allows for the addition of outdoor dining options and event spaces. The thoughtful arrangement encourages interaction among visitors, promoting a sense of community. This emphasis on shared experiences is a central aspect of the overall concept.

Abundant greenery within the dining space provides a lively atmosphere. The presence of plants not only supports culinary practices but also enhances the overall setting, creating a vibrant dining experience.
