The Pier is a residential architectural design project located in Liège, Belgium, focused on enhancing the lives of senior citizens. This project integrates modern architecture with natural elements, creating a harmonious living environment that promotes well-being and community interaction. The design incorporates spacious living units that capitalize on light and views of the surrounding waterway, forming an integral connection between the residents and their environment.

The main function of The Pier is to serve as a supportive living space for elderly individuals, emphasizing comfort, accessibility, and social engagement. The layout includes communal areas such as a therapy garden, outdoor pool, café, and library, all situated on the ground level. These shared facilities foster community ties and promote an active lifestyle among residents, encouraging interactions while providing essential services.

The Pier features a multi-level layout with a focus on open spaces that enhance visibility and accessibility. The use of materials such as steel, wood, concrete, and glass is critical in achieving the desired aesthetic and functional outcomes. Steel beams and pillars provide structural support with a minimal visual footprint, while wooden boxes for living units create a warm atmosphere. Large windows allow for natural light penetration and views of the landscape, reinforcing the connection to the exterior environment.

Unique aspects of the design include the thoughtful integration of green spaces. Roof gardens, planted terraces, and community gardens enhance aesthetic appeal while promoting mental well-being. The project's proximity to water not only provides attractive views but also serves as a therapeutic element, with water features designed to enhance the sensory experience of daily life. Spaces are designed with flexibility in mind, allowing for adaptability based on community needs.

The architecture of The Pier also emphasizes an elder-centric approach, incorporating specific features such as non-slip surfaces and accessible pathways. The arrangement of personal terraces adjacent to communal areas facilitates social interactions without sacrificing privacy. This consideration of physical and social dimensions distinguishes The Pier from conventional residential designs.

Exploring the intricacies of The Pier is essential for understanding its contribution to contemporary residential architecture. For more detailed insights into the architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural designs, interested individuals are encouraged to review the project presentation and explore the innovative architectural ideas behind this thoughtful design.
