The Walberswick Cabin is a microhome located in the village of Walberswick, Suffolk, England. Designed to address the challenges of rising property prices due to gentrification, the cabin serves as an affordable housing option. The design emphasizes sustainability while harmonizing with the coastal environment, drawing on the aesthetic of traditional fishing huts found in the area.

Elevated Living Area

The cabin features an elevated living area, providing privacy and protection from flooding, which is common in coastal regions. By raising the living quarters, it offers sweeping views of the landscape while preventing water intrusion. The structure’s height reflects a historical response to environmental conditions, connecting it to the local architectural heritage.

Material Choices

Carefully selected materials play a critical role in the cabin's design. Photovoltaic roof tiles generate energy, enhancing self-sufficiency. The project uses oriented strand board (OSB) to ensure stability and durability. Heat-treated larch cladding protects against the elements without harmful chemical treatments, maximizing the cabin's lifespan while maintaining its appeal.

Functional Design

Inside, the cabin uses smart spatial arrangements to make the most of its compact size. A combination of a Murphy bed and sofa allows the space to serve multiple functions, providing comfort for both living and sleeping. The kitchen is designed for efficiency, incorporating essential appliances into a compact setup. This thoughtful layout addresses the practical needs of residents while ensuring a comfortable atmosphere.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is a key aspect of the design, reflected in the use of compacted sheep's wool insulation. This material improves thermal performance and is biodegradable, reducing the ecological impact. Charred oak is used in load-bearing structures, offering both durability and visual appeal. These choices illustrate a commitment to ecological responsibility and practical functionality.

The Walberswick Cabin showcases a practical approach to modern living, featuring an elevated design and sustainable materials. It emphasizes a connection to its coastal surroundings while meeting the needs of its inhabitants through thoughtful design and efficiency.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
