Charred Facade and Transparent Walls Create A Community-Focused Public Space

Project in-detail

The integration of a charred facade with transparent glass walls establishes a modern architectural dialogue in Kharkiv, enhancing urban functionality while creating a vibrant community hub.
5 key facts about this project
01
Charred wooden shingles provide both aesthetic appeal and fire resistance.
02
Transparent walls enhance natural light and visual connectivity with surrounding spaces.
03
The bent A-frame design creates dynamic interior spaces with varying ceiling heights.
04
Underground parking optimizes the site without compromising surface area for public use.
05
Strategic light shafts channel sunlight throughout internal areas for energy efficiency.
The architectural design project for the reconstruction of Freedom Square in Kharkiv, Ukraine, focuses on revitalizing this historically significant urban area. The proposal seeks to enhance the site’s functionality while paying homage to its cultural heritage. The design combines modern architectural elements with existing structures to create an integrated public space that serves as a community hub.

The project features a U-shaped building that maximizes usable space and incorporates a transparent glass façade, promoting an open and inviting atmosphere. The integration of green areas and public amenities aims to foster social interaction and community engagement. This approach signifies a shift towards urban environments that prioritize sustainable development and accessibility.

Innovative Design Approaches

This design distinguishes itself through a careful balance of historical preservation and contemporary architecture. The structural integration of original columns and cornices maintains the historical essence of the square while introducing modern building technologies. The use of black glass alongside charred facade elements effectively ties the new and old structures together, creating continuity in the architectural narrative.

Unique functional elements include a flat green roof that features small cafes and leisure areas, which provide both aesthetic and practical benefits. The roof design invites visitors to enjoy open-air spaces, thus enhancing the overall usability of the area. The architectural plans indicate a focus on natural light, achieved through strategically placed light shafts, creating a pleasant indoor environment throughout the day.

Community-Centric Features

In addition to the architectural aesthetics, the project emphasizes community-oriented design. The incorporation of public gathering spaces, children’s playgrounds, and areas for cultural activities presents an opportunity for local engagement. The underground parking facility optimizes the site while preserving the visual aspect of the square.

Overall, the reconstruction of Freedom Square represents a forward-thinking urban design that enhances the cultural and practical aspects of the space. For those interested in exploring the architectural details further, a review of the architectural plans, architectural sections, and architectural designs will provide deeper insights into the innovative ideas that structure this project.
