Ceramic Radiant Heating and EvoNiq Clerestory Illuminate Sustainable Yoga Space

Project in-detail

Equipped with ceramic radiant heating and an EvoNiq clerestory that enhances natural light, the design creates an efficient and inviting space dedicated to yoga practice.
5 key facts about this project
01
Designed with offsite-fabricated tensile truss components for efficient assembly.
02
Operable clerestory windows enhance passive cooling while optimizing natural light.
03
Integrated water storage tanks and solar cell batteries support sustainability efforts.
04
Ceramic radiant heating provides discreet temperature control throughout the space.
05
Mineral wool insulation improves energy efficiency and acoustic comfort.

The yoga house is designed as a tranquil space for instruction and practice, located in an area that encourages mindfulness and well-being. The structure features a clear span area that fosters open movement for yoga activities. Its design emphasizes sustainability and the integration of natural light, enhancing the experience for users within this peaceful environment.

Structural Design

The building uses offsite fabrication of tensile truss components, allowing for large open spaces without the need for supporting columns. This approach enhances stability while providing design flexibility. Free rotating pin connections further streamline assembly, reflecting modern construction methods that aim to reduce on-site work and materials waste.

Roof and Clerestory

The roof is made from a white single-ply membrane, which helps to reflect sunlight and reduces heat absorption. This feature also allows for effective rainwater collection, supporting sustainability efforts. Additionally, operable translucent clerestory windows, made from EvoNiq Acrylite Resist or similar materials, bring in daylight and enhance passive cooling. These windows help create a comfortable atmosphere, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Utilities and Heating

Essential utilities are integrated into the central volume on the lower level, including water storage tanks and solar cell batteries. This thoughtful arrangement keeps the functionality of the building hidden from view while ensuring easy access for users. Heating is provided by ceramic radiant panels installed on the ceiling between structural bays. This heating method is efficient and maintains a pleasant temperature in the space.

Foundation and Insulation

The foundation consists of masonry construction, with an option for concrete piers on a raft foundation that suits the site's landscape. Epoxy set steel reinforcement embedded in the bedrock provides the necessary support. Inside, mineral wool insulation is placed between the floor and roof framing to improve energy efficiency. A 25mm mineral wool board is added between plywood floor sheathing and a free-floating finish floor. This detail enhances sound insulation and thermal comfort in the studio.

Attention to these details creates a space that promotes wellness and harmony. The careful integration of natural elements makes the building a calm backdrop for yoga practice. A balanced use of light and efficient systems fosters an inviting area that supports both physical and mental well-being.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
