The Vale de Moses yoga retreat is located in the stunning Serra da Estrela mountains of Portugal. It is designed as a place for relaxation and rejuvenation, embracing the idea of equanimity—a state of mental calm that nurtures the mind, body, and spirit. The layout reflects this concept with an open design, featuring distinct shapes and an arrangement that encourages both community and individual practices.

Architectural Concept

Equanimity is at the heart of the design, achieving a balance between social interaction and quiet solitude. The triangular shape of the cabin adds visual interest while providing stability and shelter. This form allows for easy movement between areas, making transitions from group settings to personal reflection spaces feel natural.

Spatial Dynamics

A central podium is a key feature of the interior, acting as a gathering point for various activities. This design element supports social engagement while accommodating moments of personal reflection. The layout emphasizes relationships between spaces, creating spots suited for group sessions or solitary meditation. Windows are placed thoughtfully to maximize natural light, enhancing the atmosphere inside.

Materiality

Local materials are significant to the retreat's design. Clay is used for roofing, ensuring durability and effective thermal performance. Limestone is part of the interior cooling system, helping to keep the space comfortable in different weather conditions. Wood is included in structural elements, providing a warm touch that connects the retreat with its surroundings and highlights its local context.

Sustainability

The retreat focuses on sustainability, incorporating features that enhance energy efficiency. By using passive solar principles and natural water management systems, the design minimizes its impact on the environment. This careful attention to resources not only addresses ecological issues but also creates a healing environment for visitors, aligning perfectly with the retreat's focus on well-being.

Interior spaces allow for a strong connection to the natural surroundings, inviting the beauty of the landscape indoors. This relationship with nature amplifies the calming experience of the retreat, creating a serene atmosphere for all who visit.
