5 key facts about this project
01
A central hollow serves as a contemplative space within the museum.
02
The design utilizes ETFE cushions for adaptive thermal comfort and ventilation.
03
Wood panels provide insulation while blending with the natural landscape.
04
Visitor pathways transition from dark to light, enhancing the exploration experience.
05
Distinct zones separate exhibition areas from staff workspaces for optimized functionality.

The Iceland Volcano Museum, known as Volcam, is situated in the striking volcanic landscape of Iceland. The museum serves educational and cultural purposes, allowing visitors to connect with the region's geological history. Its design concept places a strong emphasis on respecting the natural environment, encouraging exploration and interaction with the surrounding features.

Design Integration

The central hollow of the museum symbolizes a pearl in an oyster, creating a unique space that invites contemplation. Visitors begin their journey along a dark path that leads to brighter exhibition areas. This progression mirrors the transition from subterranean depths to the surface, emphasizing a connection to the land while promoting reflection on nature's influence.

Visitor Experience

Comfort is a key consideration in the museum's design, ensuring that guests have a pleasant experience. In winter, wood panels and ETFE cushions serve to insulate the interior, creating warmth. During the summer months, a rotative system allows for fresh air and ventilation, making the building adaptable to different weather conditions. This responsiveness helps create an engaging environment, enhancing the connection between visitors and the vibrant landscape outside.

Spatial Organization

The museum's layout features separate zones for exhibitions and staff work areas. This thoughtful organization caters to different needs. Pathways for visitors lead towards light-filled spaces, while staff members benefit from quieter areas. Such zoning not only balances the flow of movement within the museum but also ensures that both visitors and employees can focus on their experiences.

Subtle Design References

Volcam contrasts with the surrounding volcanic formations, with its horizontal lines that draw attention to the height of the nearby landscape. This design choice fosters a dialogue between the building and its environment. Wood panels and ETFE cushions work to provide functional benefits while contributing to the overall look of the museum. Every aspect of the design reflects a commitment to integrating with the Icelandic landscape, allowing visitors to appreciate both the structure and its setting.

The careful placement of these elements creates a responsive design that honors the surrounding environment, where each detail speaks to a deep respect for nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
