Quinta Do Monte D'Oiro is located about one hour north of Lisbon, in a famous wine region known for its beautiful hills and vineyards. The design focuses on embracing the essence of this landscape, taking inspiration from how light changes during sunrise and sunset. This idea, referred to as the "Hill of Gold," shapes the layout and overall appearance of the space, aiming to provide visitors with a meaningful experience.

Central Layout

The design features a central focal point, acting as the heart of the complex. From this center, linear forms spread outwards, clearly separating the hotel area from activities and services. This layout supports easy movement throughout the site, creating a connection between different spaces.

Spatial Distribution

On the western side, the hotel includes key areas such as reception, bar, guest rooms, and decks that allow guests to take in the vineyard views. The eastern section is reserved for various amenities, like a restaurant, conference rooms, and fitness options. By zoning the spaces in this way, the design encourages a natural flow and interaction, making both privacy and social engagement possible.

Connection to Nature

Architectural elements are designed to highlight the stunning landscape. The linear forms draw attention to important views of the vineyards and rolling hills. This connection to nature is pivotal, as it invites the outdoors into the experience, making the environment a fundamental part of the overall design.

Circulation Design

A circular pathway ties together the different buildings, serving as the main route for movement. This layout reinforces the theme of light and openness. It allows guests to move freely through the site while also enjoying various public and private areas. Thoughtfully placed openings and sightlines enhance the quality of light, highlighting the views that define the location.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
