The Vale de Moses Yoga Retreat is an architectural design that combines contemporary elements with traditional building techniques. Located on a cliff in Vale de Moses, the retreat serves as a peaceful place for meditation and relaxation. The overall concept of the design draws inspiration from the classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. This approach creates a balance between stability and openness, crafting an environment that encourages mindfulness.

Concept and Structure

The design features sturdy stone walls that form the main structure and symbolize the element of Earth. These walls provide essential support and durability while blending into the natural surroundings. Rising above the walls, the modern core of the retreat is lifted, allowing for an airy atmosphere and a strong connection to the sky. This aspect emphasizes the element of Air, highlighting the importance of openness and lightness in the residents' experience.

Gathering Spaces

A key feature of the retreat is the central flame element, which acts as a focal point for outdoor gatherings. This gathering space embodies the element of Fire and promotes community interactions among visitors. Additionally, the retreat incorporates a green rooftop that manages rainwater, further connecting with the element of Water. This approach not only supports sustainability but also invites participants to engage with nature and the environment around them.

Spatial Organization

The layout divides the retreat into three distinct zones that reflect stages of meditation. These zones are: being awake, which serves as the active area; falling asleep, acting as the in-between space; and deep sleep, designated for yoga and meditation. This organization allows for a smooth flow between different states of focus and tranquility. The placement from west to east ensures that natural light fills each area throughout the day, providing various views of the idyllic hillside.

Materiality and Connection

Materials used in the construction include stone for the exterior and wood and clay for the interior spaces. The selection of local and organic materials enhances the retreat's connection to the environment, promoting a sense of warmth and comfort. This choice supports the overall design goal of fostering an inviting atmosphere where visitors can immerse themselves fully in their experience.

The design thoughtfully combines natural elements and human interaction, creating an environment where users can engage in quiet reflection. The careful balance of light, space, and the representation of the elemental themes invites visitors to slow down and appreciate the moment.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
