05
Features a circular pathway to enhance engagement with geological features.

The Link is located in Grjotagja, Iceland, an area known for its cold, icy landscapes and a rich historical background associated with local legends. Serving as an observation tower, the structure creates a space for visitors to appreciate the unique geological features of the environment. The design reflects a strong connection to the site, prioritizing integration with the natural surroundings and highlighting the cultural significance of the area.

Architecture Concept

The design attempts to blend the structure with the landscape. The forms used in The Link do not follow traditional observation tower designs; instead, they mimic aspects of the rugged terrain. This approach allows the building to enhance its natural setting rather than stand out. Visitors experience a smooth transition between the architecture and the environment, promoting awareness of the beauty around them.

Movement and Interaction

A key feature of The Link is the circular pathway that guides visitors across the site. This path underscores the relationship between two tectonic plates, inviting exploration. Users can walk along it, discovering different views of the land. Along the way, resting stops provide information and shelter, offering spots for people to reflect and enjoy the sights. These elements encourage engagement with both the building and the distinctive landscape.

Modular Design and Sustainability

The design embraces a modular approach that allows for flexibility. This makes it easy to change or disassemble parts of the structure as needed, especially in a remote location. Sustainability plays a significant role in the project, with plans to incorporate geothermal energy solutions. These solutions are intended to support the building's energy needs, along with systems for purifying collected rainwater for drinking.

Technical Details

The building uses cellulose insulation to improve energy efficiency, significantly reducing heat loss. Additionally, the project includes foldable building blocks made from timber and steel. This choice aids in transportation and assembly, minimizing excess waste in both the logistics and construction processes.

The design culminates at an observation platform, providing visitors with clear views of the surrounding Icelandic landscape. This feature invites users to connect with the dramatic interplay of land and nature, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the unique setting.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
