Celestial Pods Crafted From Charred Wood and Laminated Timber In Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Charred wood and cross-laminated timber define a series of celestial pods that seamlessly integrate with Iceland’s rugged landscape, providing functional living spaces that emphasize sustainability and connection to the surrounding environment.
5 key facts about this project
01
Celestial orientation of pods is based on specific constellations.
02
Charred wooden shingles provide a fire-resistant exterior.
03
Cross-laminated timber panels enhance structural stability and sustainability.
04
Bent A-frame design optimizes natural light and views.
05
Integration with the rugged Icelandic terrain minimizes ecological footprint.

### Project Overview

Located in Iceland, the design integrates into the diverse landscapes characterized by volcanic fields, glaciers, and waterfalls. The intent is to create habitats that foster a deep connection with the natural environment while respecting the unique geographical features of the region. Emphasizing a coherent relationship between terrestrial elements and celestial influences, the project is rooted in the dialogue between these two dramatic aspects of Icelandic nature.

### Spatial Strategy

The layout consists of individual pods, each thoughtfully positioned in alignment with specific constellations, establishing a connection between inhabitants and the night sky. The geometric forms of the pods reflect celestial patterns, creating a balance between organic shapes and minimalist architecture. The spatial arrangement maximizes sightlines to significant topographical features, enhancing the user experience by promoting a connection to both land and sky.

### Materiality and Sustainability

The architectural concept prioritizes materials that align with the ecological context and climatic demands of Iceland. Wood is utilized for its natural aesthetic and sustainability, while glass components provide transparency and incorporate natural light, framing views of the surrounding landscape. Steel and aluminum frameworks offer necessary strength, and insulated materials are selected for their thermal properties. This material strategy not only supports structural integrity but also adheres to sustainable practices by minimizing environmental impact through the use of locally sourced and ethically obtained resources.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
