Celestial Observation Deck Within Learning Centers Amidst Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

The celestial observation deck rises from a series of interconnected learning centers, seamlessly blending educational environments with the natural beauty of the Icelandic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Celestial observation deck offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
02
Interconnected learning centers promote experiential education in local geology.
03
Bent A-frame design enhances structural integrity while blending with the terrain.
04
Cross-laminated timber panels contribute to sustainability and reduce carbon footprint.
05
Charred wooden shingles provide weather resistance while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

The project is set in a dramatic mountainous area in Iceland. It functions as both an educational space and a cultural hub, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the natural environment. The design aims to foster interaction and connection with the landscape, encouraging people to explore the site while appreciating its ecological and cultural significance.

Topography

The design takes advantage of the existing landscape to improve navigation and create a sense of place. The building’s shapes reflect the surrounding mountains, making them natural guides for visitors. This positioning not only enhances the building’s presence but also allows it to blend with its surroundings. The relationship between the architecture and nature is considered essential in providing a cohesive experience.

Circulation and Engagement

A central aspect of the layout is how people move through the space. Pathways lead visitors from the entrance to a central courtyard, which serves as a place for gathering and socializing. This area encourages visitors to interact with each other and the space itself. Surrounding this courtyard are learning centers that aim to educate people about local geology, climate, and plants. The design encourages exploration and discovery, fostering a greater understanding of the environment.

Experiential Design

Experiential elements are key in creating engagement with the architecture and landscape. Notably, the observation deck, known as The Pinnacle, offers expansive views of the scenic terrain. A specific staircase leads up to this area, promoting a reflective journey for visitors. As individuals climb, they experience both the architecture and the beauty of the natural world that surrounds it.

Incorporation of Natural Elements

Integrating natural features is a crucial part of the design. Learning centers are strategically located across from the main building, acting as links to the local ecosystem. This focus on the relationship between architecture and nature helps make the space an educational tool. The design language remains respectful of local culture and ecological principles, contributing to an experience that deepens the connection with the site.

The observation deck's roof extends outward, offering shade and framing clear views of the landscape. It encourages visitors to pause, enjoy the scenery, and appreciate the beauty of Iceland’s natural environment.
