The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve Visitor Centre is a structure that integrates with its natural surroundings in Abu Dhabi. Located in a landscape defined by both wetland and dry areas, it serves as a space for visitors to engage with the environment. The design emphasizes a strong relationship between landscape and building, allowing people to connect with the diverse ecosystems of the reserve.

Tree Grove

A shaded tree grove is positioned at the northeastern corner of the site. It provides a welcoming entry point for visitors and fosters an immediate connection to the natural environment. This area encourages people to gather before entering the center, creating a transition from the outdoor landscape to the interior space. The tree grove plays an important role in enhancing visitor experience while reinforcing the ecological theme of the site.

Dune

Above the visitor centre lies a dune that blends into the landscape. This feature enhances the visitor experience by offering elevated views of the wetlands. The dune not only adds visual interest but also emphasizes the project's goal of harmonizing with the landscape. Visitors are drawn to its height, which provides a unique perspective of the surrounding area.

Sails

On both the eastern and western sides of the building, sun-sails offer shade and regulate temperature within the visitor centre. These structures create sheltered areas where visitors can relax while enjoying the view. The colonnades formed by the sails provide functional space, reducing direct sunlight inside the building. They invite visitors to engage with both the architecture and the surrounding landscape while providing a comfortable environment.

Cavern

Internally, the visitor centre features cavern-like spaces that maintain a cooler and darker atmosphere. This design helps manage thermal comfort, allowing for a more pleasant experience for visitors. The use of natural elements, such as the soil roof and positioned sun-sails, protects the interior from extreme weather. Facilities are arranged to accommodate diverse visitor needs, creating a flexible space for education and exploration.

The interaction of light and shadow created by the sun-sails enriches the overall experience. Visitors are encouraged to explore the wetlands beyond, enhancing their connection to nature. This thoughtful design detail plays a significant role in fostering awareness and appreciation of the local ecosystem.
