Kāpa Refuge is a design that emphasizes the connection between shelter and landscape. Located in an area that reflects the natural shapes of dunes, it focuses on how temporary spaces serve both safety and intimacy. This approach to living seeks to enhance the relationship between people and their environment, allowing for both solitude and social interaction.

Architecture and Landscape Integration

The design prioritizes the relationship between buildings and their surroundings. By considering the topography, the structures are integrated into the landscape, creating a visual and functional harmony. This arrangement encourages calm and reflection, providing an inspiring setting for writers and others seeking a peaceful retreat.

Spatial Organization

The project features seven independent structures that are primarily situated underground. This design choice reduces visual disruption to the landscape and offers natural insulation. Each building is oriented to make the most of sunlight and warmth. The layout distinctly separates public and private spaces, promoting interaction in shared areas while allowing individual refuge. This balance creates an environment that feels both communal and personal.

Material Choices

The materials play an important role in how the spaces feel and function. Granite is used for the exterior, providing durability and establishing clear pathways and living spaces that relate directly to the natural environment. Inside, wood is chosen for walls, floors, and ceilings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This combination of materials enhances the overall comfort and tranquility of the living spaces.

Transitional Spaces

Glass features are intentionally placed to bring natural light into the interiors. These openings in the walls create a connection with the outside, making it feel like nature is part of the home.
