5 key facts about this project
The GRJÓTAGJÁ Visitor Center is located in Mývatn, Iceland, surrounded by a unique landscape shaped by volcanic activity and glacial movements. This building serves as a hub for visitors to engage with the natural environment. Designed with a concept based on twisting forms, the structure reflects the area's geological features, characterized by curves and undulations that are typical of Iceland's terrain.
Design Concept
The design revolves around the idea of twisting, borrowing inspiration from the natural formations found in Iceland. It includes a concrete base that is partially embedded in the ground, a framework made of light gauge steel, and a spiral ramp with an elevator shaft and tower. This arrangement allows for open spaces that encourage exploration while remaining connected to the surrounding landscape.
Exterior Features
The visitor center incorporates an elevated path system made from textured bar grating. This design provides good traction in winter, helping visitors navigate through snow and ice safely. The paths connect various sections of the center, promoting a smooth flow between the building and its natural setting, allowing visitors to experience the landscape more fully.
Interior Experience
Inside, the design is reminiscent of exploring natural caves. Walls curve and ceilings slope, creating a feeling of movement and discovery. A central skylight allows natural light to filter into the main areas, enhancing the cave-like quality while creating changing patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.
Materials and Sustainability
Materials have been selected for strength and sustainability. The concrete provides a solid foundation, while light gauge steel supports the overall structure. Weatherproofed aluminum panels cover the exterior, ensuring durability against the harsh Icelandic climate. Photovoltaic panels have been integrated into the design, contributing to the building’s energy needs and reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
The design culminates in a blend of interior and exterior spaces. The curved walls and ceilings create an immersive environment that encourages visitors to engage with both the building and the surrounding natural beauty. Each element of the center has been thoughtfully considered to enhance the overall experience while respecting the uniqueness of the landscape.
