Cave-Inspired Spaces in Concrete and MDF for Cinematic Storytelling

Project in-detail

The use of concrete and flexible MDF to create cave-like spaces embodies local mythology while serving as a cinematic hub for filmmakers and storytellers in Iceland's striking landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
The design incorporates an inverted "V" shape that represents the Icelandic foothills.
02
An outdoor Camp Theater blends seamlessly with repositioned rock clusters.
03
Geothermal exchange systems contribute to energy efficiency throughout the structure.
04
The pavilion includes interconnected caves that enhance spatial exploration.
05
Flexible MDF is utilized for acoustic control in the interior spaces.

The TROLL THEATER is situated within the stunning landscape of Iceland, merging local mythology with contemporary architectural design. Serving as a space for filmmakers and storytellers, it emphasizes a strong connection between its form and the surrounding environment. The design concept draws inspiration from Iceland’s natural features, creating a unique place for artistic expression.

Site Strategy
The pavilion is oriented east and west to take advantage of sunlight and offer expansive views of the landscape. Its form is both expressive and engaging, framing the picturesque scenery outside. To maintain the focus on nature, the parking area is allocated behind rock formations. This thoughtful placement encourages visitors to interact with the environment on their way to the theater.

Building Form
The structure presents an inverted "V" shape that reflects the nearby foothills. Inside, it includes four main caves that connect in a way that enhances the overall experience. The central cave acts as the main theater and accommodates up to 50 people. Adjacent to it is a museum space dedicated to the moving image, which provides valuable room for directors to showcase their work. Surrounding these areas are studios designed for administrative and collaborative purposes, promoting a relaxed environment. A lounge at the rear offers panoramic views, inviting visitors to take in the surrounding landscape.

Construction Details
Emphasizing sustainability, the construction approach focuses on environmental responsibility. The walls are built on a solid concrete foundation that ensures stability. Acoustic control is achieved with flexible MDF on the walls and ceilings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A centralized core integrates vital systems such as geothermal exchange and radiant heating. Energy-efficient LED lighting, cleverly hidden behind wood cladding, contributes to a cozy cave-like feel throughout the space.

The TROLL THEATER exemplifies a thoughtful approach to architectural design, deeply rooted in local culture while harmonizing with its natural context. Light and shadow dance throughout the interior, enriching the experience and narrative of the pavilion for every visitor.
