5 key facts about this project
01
Cascading forms reflect the geological contours of the Icelandic landscape.
02
Glu-lam timber construction enhances structural performance while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
03
Sedum roofing contributes to local biodiversity and ecological sustainability.
04
Well-defined pathways separate tourist and local activities for improved user experience.
05
Large openings provide panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic terrain.

The Peaks of Grjótagjá is located in Iceland, where the land's geological features greatly influence its architecture. It consists of three distinct forms that rise from the earth, reflecting the area’s tectonic activity. This design honors the region's geological history while providing a space for visitors to connect with the natural environment. By blending in with the landscape, the forms create a sense of unity with the volcanic surroundings.

Design Concept

The design features cascading shapes that resemble the natural rise and fall of the land. This approach helps the structure appear as part of the earth rather than a separate entity. Visitors are guided through the site by these forms, enhancing their experience as they journey between significant points, especially the bathing areas of Karlagjá and Kvennagjá.

Pathway Organization

Integrated deep narrow channels effectively separate the flow of tourists from the activities of locals. This arrangement encourages a smoother experience for both groups, reducing conflicts. The pathways serve a clear purpose, helping people navigate the area easily while highlighting the distinct functions of each section.

Material Selection

Material choices play an important role in the design. Glu-lam timber has been selected for its structural integrity, offering durability while maintaining a pleasing appearance. The presence of a sedum layer in the roofing design promotes ecological sustainability, helping the architecture blend with local plant life. These materials enhance the functionality and contribute to a harmonious relationship with the landscape.

Visually Dynamic Elements

The project aims to evolve as time passes. The forms are designed to weather naturally and gradually become part of the environment. This intention fosters a long-lasting bond between the architecture and its natural setting. Large openings frame breathtaking views of the surrounding land, inviting visitors to engage fully with the area's unique geological features.

At the heart of the design is a high viewing platform. It provides an elevated perspective of the dramatic terrain, emphasizing the connection between the built structure and the Icelandic landscape. This feature encourages exploration and contemplation, allowing visitors to appreciate the natural beauty that defines Grjótagjá.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
