The Teddington Island Hospice is located on an isle in the River Thames, designed with a focus on end-of-life care. The setting aims to provide a calming atmosphere for patients, while also engaging the community with hospice services. The design integrates the building with the natural landscape, creating a comforting environment that emphasizes accessibility and connection. Both patients and their families are central to the design approach, ensuring their needs are met within a supportive space.

Proposed Spaces

The hospice includes various spaces, such as a reception area, common room, nurse room, private patient rooms, a church, a library, staff area, and entrance. The reception serves as a welcoming point, inviting visitors into a warm and caring environment. The common room acts as a gathering space, allowing families to connect with each other, supporting their emotional needs during vulnerable times.

Private patient rooms are essential to the overall design, offering privacy and a space for reflection. These rooms are thoughtfully arranged to provide quiet and comfort, allowing patients to experience dignity in their care. The nurse room is important for healthcare management, enabling staff to assist patients effectively. Additionally, the staff area is designed to encourage teamwork among caregivers, improving the overall functioning of the hospice.

Community Engagement

The hospice aims to raise awareness about the importance of hospice services, especially in light of the limited funding received by independent hospices in the UK. By situating this facility on Teddington Island, the design seeks to draw attention to palliative care, highlighting its role as a vital community resource. Engaging the public and the government in discussions about hospice care is a central goal of the project.

The relationship between the hospice and its natural environment enhances the overall experience for everyone involved. This connection encourages patients and their visitors to enjoy the surrounding greenery, providing a peaceful backdrop that supports the hospice's mission. The careful attention to detail in the design fosters comfort and serenity for all who enter, creating a space that truly reflects the needs of patients at the end of life.
