The Tree House is located in the Valdivian forest of Valdivia, Chile, and functions as a retreat for a group of friends seeking relaxation in nature. The design emphasizes a vertical structure that connects several levels, creating a strong relationship with the surrounding environment. Occupants are invited to immerse themselves in the natural setting while enjoying both communal and private spaces.

Spatial Organization

The design of the Tree House includes a series of interconnected levels that differentiate private areas from communal ones. The upper floors house bedrooms and bathrooms, providing a retreat for rest and privacy. The second floor features shared living spaces like the kitchen and living room. This arrangement encourages social interaction while maintaining personal space when needed.

Architectural Integration

A central trunk-like element runs vertically through the structure, linking the various levels. This design choice reflects the forest's natural forms and creates a unique experience in each space. Multiple exits are strategically placed to offer views and promote interaction with the outdoors. Each opening not only lets in natural light but also frames different aspects of the landscape, enhancing the connection to nature.

Environmental Considerations

The design incorporates passive strategies that improve energy efficiency and sustainability. The layout is arranged to optimize heating, using the warmth generated by the kitchen on the first floor to warm the upper levels. Various openings throughout the house allow for cross ventilation, aiding in temperature control. Angled windows are positioned to capture sunlight effectively, contributing to overall comfort.

Materiality

The exterior features carbonized wood, chosen for durability and its ability to blend with the forest environment. Inside, white walls create an open feel while reducing visual clutter. The simplicity of these choices reinforces the idea that the true limits of the space are defined only by the surrounding trees and sky. Additionally, gutter systems are included for rainwater collection, fitting into the overall ecological focus of the design.

The details of the Tree House highlight a careful response to its natural setting. The integration of the structure with its surroundings creates a living experience that encourages an appreciation of nature while providing comfort and functionality.
