Carbonized Wood Cantilever Above Lake Views with Family Spaces

Project in-detail

Cantilevered over Lake Mývatn, the visitor center employs carbonized wood to create spacious family-friendly areas while drawing connections to the surrounding volcanic landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Cantilevered design provides panoramic views of Lake Mývatn.
02
Entry access is through a below-ground tunnel that ramps up into the center.
03
Child-minding area connects directly to hiking paths in the lava fields.
04
Carbonized wood cladding enhances durability while emphasizing warmth.
05
Hverfjall wing serves as a contemplative café space elevated above ground.

Víðsýni is situated in the unique landscape of Dimmuborgir, Iceland. It responds to the prominent natural features in the area, including Hverfjall Volcano, Lake Mývatn, and the Dimmuborgir Lava Field. The design aims to strengthen the connection between the built environment and nature, allowing visitors to engage deeply with the surrounding landscape and its cultural significance.

Building Orientation

Three distinct wings form the site, each aligned with key landscape elements. The lakeside wing extends over the terrain, resembling a bridge above Lake Mývatn. This design enhances the relationship between the structure and the water, offering views that draw visitors into the reflective qualities of the lake.

Child-minding Area

The child-minding area is intentionally kept at a lower elevation, promoting interaction with the landscape and connecting to hiking paths that weave through the lava fields. This careful design choice allows for an educational experience, letting visitors explore and appreciate the natural surroundings in a meaningful way.

Experience of Elevation

The Hverfjall wing rises above the ground, inspired by the height of the volcano. Within this section, a café creates a space for visitors to pause and reflect. This element deepens the connection to the geological history of Hverfjall, inviting contemplation of its past activities and calm periods. The height of the wing accentuates the conversation with the landscape and enhances understanding of the natural forces at play.

Materiality

Material choices are key to the overall feel of Víðsýni. Carbonized wood cladding is used for its durability and warmth, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Additional wood cladding reinforces the natural connection to the environment, while concrete flooring offers a solid foundation that supports the interior’s simplicity and practicality.

The entry sequence invites visitors to descend underground and then rise into the bright interior, marking a transition from below to above. This journey symbolically connects visitors to the earth, enriching their experience as they enter and explore the space.
