5 key facts about this project
01
Constructed with carbonized wood façades that improve durability and aesthetic value.
02
Rammed earth walls provide thermal mass, enhancing indoor climate control.
03
A flexible interior layout supports both communal activities and private use.
04
Natural light is maximized through fully operable façades.
05
Terraces create seamless connections between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

The design features two connected buildings located near a tranquil lake, with a focus on how the structures interact with each other and their environment. The arrangement emphasizes a courtyard layout, allowing the buildings to stand apart while still maintaining a visual connection. This design not only encourages community interaction but also provides private spaces for residents.

Architectural Concept

The inspiration comes from traditional barn architecture, which influences the overall shape and organization of the buildings. The roofs are designed to fit harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, creating a familiar silhouette. This choice helps the structures relate to their context while simplifying construction. It results in spaces that feel both welcoming and relevant to the area.

Spatial Organization

Inside, a grid of columns shapes the layout, dividing the spaces into flexible areas. The design allows for various uses, accommodating both communal activities and private time. Connecting spaces promote movement and interaction, helping users transition smoothly between rooms. Differing ceiling heights add interest to the interiors, making the experience of moving through the buildings engaging.

Material Selection

Careful consideration was given to the materials used in construction. The façades feature carbonized wood, which improves durability and offers a distinct visual presence. Inside, light wood paneling creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, in contrast to the sturdier outer shell. The studio house includes solid walls made of dyed rammed earth, contributing to a comfortable interior environment and robust structure.

Connection to the Outdoors

Both buildings have terraces that enhance the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces. These areas invite residents to experience the natural surroundings. Open façades allow plenty of light and fresh air into the interiors, ensuring they remain bright and welcoming. This design detail strengthens the connection with nature, making the living experience both comfortable and inspiring.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
