Carbonized Timber and Trapezoidal Roofs in a Volcanic Landscape

Project in-detail

Set in a volcanic landscape, the café combines carbonized timber and a trapezoidal roof to create a functional space that enriches the hiking experience for visitors.
5 key facts about this project
01
Carbonized timber exterior enhances weather resistance and durability.
02
Trapezoidal roof design maximizes natural light while providing shelter from harsh weather.
03
Strategically oriented towards Hverfjall volcano for scenic views and environmental integration.
04
Multifunctional layout supports community interaction and visitor education.
05
Emphasis on local materials reflects the cultural heritage of Icelandic architecture.

The design for the café at Hverfjall volcano in Iceland brings together elements from traditional Nordic longhouses with contemporary ideas. Set in a unique volcanic landscape, the café provides a place for visitors to rest and enjoy the surroundings. The primary design concept draws inspiration from the historical shapes of Viking Age structures, combining them with modern architectural features to create a functional and engaging space.

Design Inspiration

The building is oriented towards Hverfjall volcano, enhancing the connection between its interior and the striking outdoor scenery. Large windows offer spectacular views, bringing the beauty of the natural landscape inside. This deliberate orientation contributes to a sense of openness and light within the café, allowing visitors to feel part of the environment around them.

Interior Layout

Inside, the café is organized to promote movement and interaction among visitors. Different areas are allocated for relaxing, socializing, and obtaining information, which helps create a welcoming atmosphere. This organization supports both the need for comfort and the practicalities of preparing for nearby hiking trails. Visitors move naturally through the space, guided by the layout that encourages exploration and engagement.

Material Choices

Materials play a significant role in shaping the café’s appearance and functionality. Carbonized timber is used for the exterior, resulting in a dark, cohesive look that blends well with its surroundings. The roof features weather-resistant sheet metal, which provides protection from the elements while maintaining a clean and modern form. These material choices not only fulfill practical needs but also enhance the overall architectural expression.

Distinctive Features

One of the defining characteristics of the café is its overhanging roof. This feature provides essential shelter from harsh weather on the north side while capturing sunlight from the south. It creates pleasant outdoor areas, allowing visitors to enjoy the fresh air. As guests approach the café, the combination of thoughtful design and the dramatic backdrop of the volcano forms an inviting place for rest and reflection.
