05
At night, internal illumination creates a soft glow that accentuates the tower's interaction with the landscape.

The Kurgi Observation Tower is located atop the Kurgi estate hill in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. This structure serves as an observation point, designed to engage visitors with the natural environment. The tower captures the movement of wind and encourages people to connect with the landscape in a meaningful way. The design emphasizes a close relationship with nature, integrating the forces of the outside world into the visitor experience.

Spatial Configuration

The layout of the tower features oval passageways that promote exploration. These pathways blur the lines between inside and outside, creating a sense of continuity with the landscape. As visitors move through the space, they encounter openings that allow the wind to flow through, enhancing the sensory experience. The design invites a natural curiosity, encouraging individuals to wander and discover different perspectives of the surrounding area.

Functionality and Accessibility

The lower level of the tower focuses on accessibility and interaction. It incorporates layers of curtains, allowing the space to adapt to various activities and visitors. A shaded stable nearby provides practical support for those arriving on horseback. Walking paths lead guests to a central washbasin, orienting them within the site and creating a welcoming approach before they begin their ascent.

Materiality and Structural Elements

The construction uses a steel frame that provides solid support while maintaining a lightweight look. Horticultural fleece is used for the curtain layers, which enhances the relationship with the environment. The translucent properties of the fleece allow natural light to play across the interior, creating a visual connection with the changing elements outside. This combination of materials reinforces the tower's role in allowing people to experience nature fully.

Architectural Illumination

At night, the Kurgi Observation Tower becomes even more captivating as its internal lights interact with the fabric layers. This effect produces a soft glow that stands out against the night sky. The illuminated structure serves as a visual beacon, reflecting the natural beauty of the area. This design element not only enhances the tower's presence but also reinforces the intended connection between people and the surrounding landscape, inviting moments of quiet reflection.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
