Cantilevered Structure With Exposed Concrete And Glass Facades Enhances Urban Connectivity

Project in-detail

Set against an urban backdrop, the cantilevered structure utilizes exposed concrete and glass façades to create an environment that fosters community interaction while accommodating diverse mixed-use functions.
5 key facts about this project
01
Utilizes a cantilevered design to maximize outdoor space and shelter public areas.
02
Incorporates extensive glazing to enhance natural light and visual connectivity with the surroundings.
03
Features a composite panel façade that allows for creative textural variation and aesthetic appeal.
04
Employs passive solar design principles to optimize energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
05
Integrates landscaped areas to promote biodiversity and improve the urban microclimate.

### Project Overview

Located in an urban setting, this building exemplifies a modern architectural response that harmonizes with its environment. The design intent focuses on fostering interaction between the structure and the surrounding spaces, emphasizing transparency, openness, and a balanced integration of different styles and materials. Drawing inspiration from modernist principles, particularly those espoused by Le Corbusier, the design prioritizes a dialogue between light and spatial organization.

### Material Diversity

The project employs a carefully curated selection of materials enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Reinforced concrete forms the backbone of the structure, enabling expansive, uninterrupted interior spaces. Extensive glazing on the façades not only maximizes natural light but also blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Steel framing supports cantilevered sections, reinforcing the structural integrity while contributing to a contemporary visual language. Additionally, traditional clay brick elements provide thermal mass, reflecting a nod to local construction methods. Aluminum window frames offer a minimalistic touch, while composite paneling introduces a dynamic interplay of textures on the building’s exterior.

### Organizational Strategy

The architecture is organized over four levels, including a basement for parking, with each floor fulfilling distinct roles. The ground level is characterized by open-plan spaces designed for accessibility and public engagement, fostering a welcoming atmosphere. The multi-faceted façade showcases both horizontal and vertical design elements, allowing for a variety of perspectives and enhancing the visual character of the building. Additionally, the angular roof not only facilitates effective water runoff but also contributes to the project’s sustainable design goals by optimizing passive solar energy utilization. Thoughtful landscaping complements the architectural features, providing green spaces that enhance user experience and promote environmental sustainability.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
