5 key facts about this project
01
Cantilevered structure allows for unobstructed views from multiple levels.
02
Used ultra-lightweight concrete to minimize environmental impact on the site.
03
Incorporates a lattice framework designed to enhance structural transparency.
04
Features open-frame design that fosters a seamless connection with nature.
05
Constructed using locally sourced materials to promote sustainability.

The architectural project "Double Negative" serves as a unique observational tower situated within a volcanic landscape. Its design integrates seamlessly with the surroundings, emphasizing both the architectural form and the natural context. Intended to offer visitors a panoramic view of the area, the structure embodies a careful balance between built elements and the landscape, allowing users to engage deeply with their environment.

Unique Concept and Functionality
"Double Negative" represents an exploration of absence and presence through architectural form. The design reflects the duality of human interaction with nature, creating a space that is both inviting and contemplative. The observational tower serves as a gathering point for visitors, enabling them to experience the terrain from multiple vantage points. Its design encourages a physical journey upwards, enhancing the sensory experience as visitors ascend through the structure.

Distinct Design Approaches
The project stands out due to its innovative use of materials and structural systems. Lightweight concrete is employed for the main structure, reinforcing durability while minimizing the physical footprint on the site. The choice of wood for the framework introduces warmth and aligns the architecture with the natural elements of the landscape. Metal components are incorporated for stability, providing essential support while maintaining a sleek aesthetic.

The vertical configuration of the tower facilitates a unique spatial journey. Open observational areas throughout the structure allow for expansive views and encourage engagement with the landscape. The design draws inspiration from natural fissures and caverns, employing textured facades that mimic geological patterns. This thoughtful approach fosters a connection between the tower and its environment, enhancing the visitor experience.

Architectural Details and Elements
"Double Negative" features a lattice framework that underscores the interplay of solidity and void. This design method promotes safety while allowing for transparency, promoting visual connection to the exterior landscape. Bracing cables anchor the structure, ensuring stability in the face of environmental challenges. The integration of sustainable construction practices and local resources further minimizes the project's ecological impact, reinforcing the relationship between architecture and its site.

For those interested in a deeper understanding of "Double Negative," explore various aspects of the project, including architectural plans, architectural sections, architectural designs, and architectural ideas. The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
