04
Structural steel allows for a reduced footprint while maintaining stability.
05
The design features a pathway that encourages visitor interaction with the natural surroundings.

### Overview

Located in De Smet, South Dakota, the observation tower serves as a landmark along Highway 14, enhancing the area's historical narrative while providing a focal point for both travelers and the local community. The design aims to connect the region’s past with contemporary interpretations of the landscape, fostering engagement and a sense of community among its users.

### Spatial Strategy and Architectural Features

The tower's design is characterized by its elevation and angular form, which echoes the rugged terrain of the surrounding landscape. Multiple cantilevered observation decks allow for panoramic views while dynamically interacting with shifting light throughout the day. The interior emphasizes openness, with strategic use of slatted wood and glass to create a play of light and shadow that enriches the visitor experience. A wooden pathway leading to the tower enhances accessibility and encourages a transition from the everyday travel experience to moments of contemplation.

### Materiality and Environmental Integration

Key materials used in the construction include structural steel for durability, concrete for a stable foundation, and glass to offer transparency and connect the interior with the exterior environment. Treated timber is incorporated in the observation decks and staircases to provide a tactile engagement, while metal cladding contributes to a modern aesthetic that balances light and shade. Each material is selected for both its functional properties and its resonance with the natural textures of the local landscape, promoting a harmonious relationship between the structure and its surroundings.

Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025.
