The European Velo Stops project is located along the Eurovelo 6, a major cycling route in Europe that connects various regions. The design aims to create a functional hub for cyclists, providing necessary amenities while enhancing the overall experience of using the path. By viewing the threshold as a space for people, the design bridges historical significance with modern cycling needs.

Facility Design

The structure features a cantilever that extends over the Eurovelo 6 path. This design creates a clear relationship between the stop and the cyclists traveling underneath. The cantilever serves both to mark the site’s presence and to provide easy access to nearby amenities. Integrated bike racks within the main support column allow cyclists to park conveniently while they use the facilities.

User Experience

A specially designed stairway leads to the raised platform. This stair features a kinked shape that adds interest and encourages exploration. Beneath the canopy, there are areas for sitting and lying down that invite users to relax. The platform itself allows cyclists to take in their surroundings and reflect on their journey. This experience enhances the connection between where they have been and where they are headed.

Interior Functionality

The canopy above the stair transitions from outdoor to indoor space, housing various facilities. These include beds, a bathroom, bike repair stations, and a counter for services. Each element is carefully placed to meet the needs of travelers, while shaded sitting areas offer comfort for users. The design ensures that all facilities are easily accessible.

Material Use

Materials chosen for the construction include concrete, wood framing with a plaster finish, and steel for the cantilever. These materials provide the necessary strength and durability. They also contribute to a cohesive look that blends with the surroundings. The careful selection of materials enhances the building’s functionality while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic.

The design emphasizes creating a supportive environment for cyclists, allowing them to engage with the space while traveling along the Eurovelo 6. Each detail has been considered to improve comfort and accessibility, making the stop a welcoming part of their journey.
