The architectural design project at hand is a dedicated observation deck and café situated within a distinctive geological context. The structure is strategically oriented to maximize views while allowing for engagement with the surrounding landscape. Its design emphasizes interaction with the natural environment, providing visitors with an immersive experience centered around geological observation and education.

The project effectively integrates various functions, including visitor access, informative displays, a café, and observation areas, thus serving both recreational and educational purposes. The observation deck offers panoramic views, while the café provides a space for relaxation and social gathering.

Unique Design Approaches in Materiality and Structure

The architectural design distinguishes itself through its careful selection of materials and innovative structural solutions. Cor-ten steel is employed for the exterior, allowing the building to blend with the rocky terrain due to its natural patina. This material choice not only addresses aesthetic considerations but also ensures durability and minimal maintenance.

The project utilizes locally sourced wood for its interior, contrasting the industrial exterior and creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors. Glass elements are strategically used to enhance visibility and natural light, effectively connecting the interior space with the external environment.

The structure is primarily vertical, featuring a prism-like form that elevates the observation experience. Cantilevered portions of the café and viewing platforms provide dynamic spatial opportunities, encouraging visitors to explore different vantage points. The structural integrity is achieved through a bracing system that supports the building’s height and withstands seismic forces, vital for the geological area.

Functional Organization of the Space

The building's layout effectively responds to its intended functions. The ground floor features a clear entry point along with administrative areas, creating a seamless transition for visitors. Ascending to the first floor, users find the café and observation area, designed with large glass windows that offer unobstructed views of the landscape.

The architectural plans reflect a thoughtful approach to user experience, with carefully planned circulation paths that guide visitors through the building. The inclusion of educational displays serves to enhance visitors' understanding of the site's geological significance, further enriching their experience.

The project exemplifies a strong commitment to sustainability through the incorporation of photovoltaic cells, which harness solar energy to meet some of the building’s energy needs. This integration of renewable technologies signifies an important step towards energy efficiency while promoting environmental stewardship.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
