Villa Duin is a hospice care facility located in the peaceful coastal dunes of the Netherlands. It aims to support individuals nearing the end of life and focuses on their psychological well-being. The design integrates the building with the natural landscape, creating a peaceful space that promotes comfort and mindfulness for both patients and their families during difficult times.

Design Concept

The architectural approach of Villa Duin is minimalist and thoughtfully designed. Two horizontal slabs sit gently in the hilly terrain, establishing a quiet presence that aligns with the surrounding landscape. This layout allows expansive views of the sea, which invites a sense of calm. The design connects the indoor spaces with the natural environment, making it a place of solace.

Spatial Arrangement

Visitors to Villa Duin move along a sloped path that leads underneath the slabs, ensuring easy access for everyone, including those with mobility challenges. This entrance opens up into a central courtyard that reflects the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The layout guides visitors naturally toward the entrance while allowing brief glimpses of the interior. This approach creates a smooth transition from the outside world into a serene setting.

Interior Organization

Inside, the spaces are arranged to transition from communal areas to more private settings. Open circulation areas surround the inner courtyard, letting natural light flow into the rooms. Communal living spaces are positioned to overlook the sea, enhancing the connection between the occupants and the natural surroundings. Private therapy rooms provide a quiet retreat, important for reflection and peace.

Natural Light and Multifunctionality

Natural light is a key feature of Villa Duin, contributing to the warm atmosphere throughout the building. The glazed corridor that surrounds the patio maximizes daylight in the circulation spaces. The design includes multipurpose areas, such as a quiet space for contemplation, which emphasizes the need for reflection in a hospice environment.

The combination of extensive glazing and thoughtfully arranged spaces helps create a calm environment. This approach not only focuses on the physical space but also aims to support the emotional needs of residents and their families during their time at Villa Duin.
