The Tower at Grjótagjá is located in a landscape filled with rolling green hills and misty views. Designed to function as a café and an observation area, it connects visitors with the natural beauty of Iceland. The design idea is to blend the building with its surroundings, using a straightforward approach that emphasizes both the interior and the outdoor environment.

Design Concept and Aesthetics

The design focuses on how the building interacts with the landscape. The exterior is made of smooth concrete, providing a modern look that fits well with the rugged scenery. Protruding elements extend from various parts of the structure, adding visual interest and guiding movement. These features are not just decorative; they create different views and experiences for those inside.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, space is organized in a way that feels open and airy. The high ceilings contribute to a feeling of lightness. A notable feature is the stair system that winds around a central wall. This design encourages visitors to go up through the building, revealing changing perspectives of the surrounding area. Every landing on the stairs offers a new way to appreciate the landscape, making each step an opportunity for reflection.

Café and Observation Deck

The café is located on an elevated level, providing a perfect spot for people to relax and enjoy their drinks while taking in the views. A balcony extends from the café, offering a unique perspective of the Icelandic scene. The roof is designed to be used as an extra space, allowing visitors to step outside and engage with nature. This thoughtful design invites a more intimate experience with the surroundings.

The structure contains simple yet effective features, enhancing both its beauty and practicality. As one moves through the tower, the thoughtful arrangement of spaces and the careful consideration of views enrich the overall experience, emphasizing the connection between the building and the landscape it inhabits.
