The project "ÍS - HOT!" is located in Iceland, reflecting the island's unique geological features and cultural heritage. The design serves as both a museum and an information center, exploring the themes of fire and ice that are integral to the Icelandic landscape. Its overall concept is influenced by volcanic forms, creating a deep connection to the surroundings while providing an underground experience for visitors.

Spatial Organization

A significant portion of the building is designed to be below ground, leading to an underground museum that mimics the experience of exploring natural caves. As visitors move through the space, they encounter a variety of narrow and wide areas that enhance engagement with the exhibitions. The journey concludes in a café where expansive views of the landscape create a strong connection between the inside and outside.

Thematic Elements

At the core of the design are two focal points known as "hearts," representing the themes of fire and ice. These elements not only reflect the cultural significance of these natural features but also help establish a cohesive architectural identity. The design allows light to play through the spaces, creating a range of moods and experiences as visitors navigate through the building.

Sustainability Features

The building incorporates renewable energy strategies, such as an aerodynamic shape that captures wind energy and the use of geothermal power. This focus on sustainability is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by Iceland's climate. By prioritizing eco-friendly practices, the architecture aligns with contemporary approaches aimed at reducing environmental impact.

Design Details

Throughout the project, attention to the surrounding landscape is evident. The café design is inspired by the northern lights, offering a colorful interior that contrasts with the natural tones outside. This detail enriches the sensory experience for visitors and reinforces the connection between the architecture and the remarkable Icelandic scenery.
