The Ozolini farmhouse is located in a calm and beautiful area, designed to encourage introspection and meditation. It serves as a contemporary retreat that connects deeply with the surrounding nature. The overall concept seeks to create a peaceful environment that enhances clarity of thought, inviting those who enter to engage fully with their surroundings.

Spatial Organization

The main living space of the farmhouse is open, allowing easy access to outdoor areas through large balconies. This design choice promotes interaction with the landscape, making it a key element for meditation. Walls and other structures have been used to create views while also allowing for privacy, adding a layer of intimacy to the experience. Storage solutions are hidden within the walls, contributing to a clean and minimal look that minimizes distractions.

Central Elements

A wood stove sits centrally in the pavilion, acting as a focal point that defines the entrance. It provides warmth and encourages gatherings while maintaining an intimate setting. The layout emphasizes a horizontal design, strengthening the connection to the surrounding landscape. A hollow joint runs around the building and continues inside, fostering a sense of continuity that enhances the tranquility of the interior.

Sustainability Features

Sustainable practices are essential to the farmhouse’s design. Systems for collecting rainwater are seamlessly integrated into the structure, addressing practical needs while reducing environmental impact. A detachable water tank simplifies maintenance and usability. In addition, heating wires are installed in the roof to melt snow in winter, helping to keep the building accessible. Solar panels provide electricity, further enhancing the self-sufficiency of the farmhouse.

Materiality

The exterior features burnt wood cladding, which offers durability and lends a rustic touch to the structure. Inside, light wood is used, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This thoughtful choice of materials helps the farmhouse blend into its environment, reflecting a modern interpretation of traditional building methods. The result is a cohesive space that invites relaxation and connection with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
