The TURNBR project is located in Iceland on a fault line marking the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It combines the functions of a tower and a bridge, allowing visitors to move through the landscape while providing a space to contemplate the geological features of the area. The design aims to connect these two sides of the fault, creating an inviting point of interest for exploration and learning about the forces that shape the land.

Architecture Concept

The design represents a large wooden blade, symbolically uniting the two sides of the geological divide. This form captures the essence of the rift created by tectonic activity, encouraging visitors to consider the natural forces at work. The geometry of the structure enhances its presence within the landscape and guides visitors along a network of paths that weave through the terrain, inviting engagement with both the building and the surrounding environment.

Materiality

Thoughtful material choices define the character of the building. The exterior features burnt wood, a durable option that protects against the elements while reflecting traditional craftsmanship. This selection connects the structure with the rugged Icelandic landscape. Internally, raw natural wood is used, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that allows natural light to fill the spaces, enhancing the experience for all who enter.

Programmatic Elements

Key facilities are integrated into the design to support a diverse range of visitors. A reception area helps to guide guests to various amenities, including locker rooms and relaxation spaces. The design also provides gender-specific cave access, ensuring comfort and practicality. A cafeteria is positioned to offer views of the fault line, providing a place to enjoy refreshments while appreciating the surrounding landscape.

Design Details

Observation platforms incorporated throughout the building allow for sweeping views of the nearby volcanic landscape, including Hverfjall volcano. These platforms offer opportunities for reflection and deeper connection with the natural surroundings. The combination of thoughtful design elements in TURNBR enhances the relationship between the structure and its environment, serving as both a place for education and an opportunity to experience the beauty of the land.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
