The “Bean” project represents a modular coffee kiosk designed to enhance coffee consumption within urban settings across Northern Europe, including cities such as Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo, and Copenhagen. This architectural design integrates functional space with cultural significance, aiming to foster community interaction while delivering a clear and accessible coffee experience.

The primary function of the Bean kiosk is to facilitate the brewing and serving of coffee in a compact and efficient manner. It incorporates three distinct zones that cater to various aspects of the coffee-making process, ensuring a seamless flow from preparation to consumption. The configuration allows for a dynamic user experience, where patrons can observe the coffee brewing process, enhancing their connection to the beverage. The design places an emphasis on transparency, utilizing large glass sections to bridge the interior and exterior spaces, inviting interaction between users and the coffee-making operation.

The use of laminated wood demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices while maintaining aesthetic appeal. MDF is strategically used for internal panels, which are both economical and adaptable to the required finishes. The employment of brushed aluminum provides durability and modernity, reinforcing the project's contemporary character. Insulated glass elements optimize natural light and thermal efficiency, creating a comfortable environment year-round.

One distinctive feature of the Bean project is its modularity. The structure is designed with assembly in mind, allowing it to be easily adapted to various urban contexts without losing its identity. This is especially relevant for cities with varying climatic conditions. Each kiosk can be tailored to reflect local culture, encouraging a sense of place and community ownership. The design's emphasis on user engagement, from the sensory experience of brewing coffee to the physical interaction with the space, sets the Bean apart from conventional coffee outlets.

The architectural design also offers practical benefits through its thoughtful organization. By separating service, brewing, and social areas, the project minimizes congestion and optimizes the customer experience. The aesthetic connection to the coffee-making process invites curiosity, encouraging customers to engage with their coffee in a more meaningful way.

For those interested in a deeper understanding of the architectural intent, examining the architectural plans, sections, and detailed design elements will provide additional insights into the project’s thoughtful approach to urban coffee culture. The Bean kiosk represents a sophisticated blend of utility and design, standing as a relevant example in modern architectural practices. The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge invites architects and designers to create iconic public sculptures for one of two sites in Saudi Arabia: Abu Hadriyah Road or the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar. Proposals should reflect Saudi identity, culture, and future aspirations.

`

The Mujassam Watan Urban Sculpture Challenge is an international architecture and design competition inviting creatives to shape the future of Saudi Arabia’s public spaces. With a total prize fund of €50,000, the competition calls for sculptural proposals that merge cultural symbolism with innovative design, offering participants a chance to see their concepts brought to life in a rapidly transforming national context.

Organised by Buildner in partnership with the Mujassam Watan Initiative, the challenge focuses on two prominent locations: Abu Hadriyah Road, a major highway and gateway into the Eastern Province, and the Tharwa Sea Front in Al-Khobar, a pedestrian-focused waterfront district. Designers must select one site and develop a sculpture that engages with its surroundings—whether addressing the fast-paced dynamism of a transit corridor or creating moments of interaction along a coastal promenade.

Proposals should be bold, site-specific, and rooted in narrative—drawing on themes such as heritage, national identity, transformation, and dialogue. Environmental responsiveness, material durability, and feasibility are strongly encouraged, as winning projects may be selected for actual construction.

Each submission must include four A2 landscape presentation boards, a cover image, and a written project description. The competition is open to professionals and students alike, working individually or in teams of up to four people. No professional license is required.

Registration is open until July 24, 2025, with final submissions due by August 27, 2025. Winners will be announced on October 1, 2025.
