The Hospice Centre in Malta provides a thoughtful environment for cancer patients and their families. Set within a calm landscape, the design aims to create a space that feels comforting and supportive. The main concept focuses on making a place that resembles a home, offering peace to those facing difficult situations.

Site Strategy

The layout is carefully designed with separate spaces that encourage privacy and intimacy. Surrounding vegetation shields the center from outside views and reduces noise, creating a more tranquil atmosphere. A pathway meanders through the greenery, guiding visitors toward a formal garden that extends from the building's interior. This garden acts as a natural connection, leading to the quietest part of the site and enhancing the overall healing experience through contact with nature.

Spatial Arrangement

The building is organized on a 4-meter by 4-meter grid, which helps define the relationship between different areas. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light to fill the interior, making the spaces feel open and inviting. An open courtyard functions as a central communal area, allowing for interaction among visitors while still providing opportunities for solitude. This balance is essential for fostering both social connections and personal reflection.

Sustainability and Materiality

Design choices emphasize sustainability and simple aesthetics. Deep overhangs shade the building from excessive sunlight, helping maintain comfortable temperatures indoors. High-level windows assist in ventilation, promoting airflow throughout the spaces. Inside, white walls and ceilings create a bright environment, while parquet flooring adds warmth underfoot. Bronze frames for windows and doors contribute a sense of durability and elegance, aligning with the project's ecological focus.

Natural Integration

A green roof supports local wildlife and helps regulate temperatures, ensuring the structure complements its environment. The arrangement of spaces and the inclusion of green elements work together to foster a calming atmosphere. A feature wall surrounding the fireplace serves as a focal point, inviting communal gatherings and providing a sense of warmth. This attention to detail creates a welcoming environment for all who enter, enriching the experience for those navigating challenging health journeys.
