The Columbarium, titled "The Chambers of Memories," is designed as a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance. Located in a serene landscape, it offers a setting that aims to honor the memory of those who have passed. The project employs geometric forms and significant numbers, creating a cohesive atmosphere for the community to engage with themes of life and death.

Design Concept

At the core of the design is the circle, symbolizing eternity and unity. This shape guides the overall layout, promoting a sense of wholeness within the structure. The number 3 features prominently, representing perfection and completion. Alongside this, the number 12 embodies the order found in nature and time, grounding the space in universal themes that resonate with many people.

Central Features

A fountain occupies the heart of the Columbarium, serving as a gathering point for visitors. This element encourages personal acts of remembrance, such as placing candles and flowers, fostering a sense of connection to both the living and the departed. The interplay of fire and water in this central feature symbolizes renewal and the ongoing cycle of life, enriching the experience within the space.

Materiality

Brick is the primary building material, linking the structure to historical practices in architecture. As a substance, brick has been used for centuries across different cultures, including those of Judaism and Christianity. This choice not only ensures durability but also allows the building to resonate with deep-rooted traditions and collective memories, enhancing the site’s significance.

Functional Considerations

The layout addresses practical needs while ensuring an engaging experience for users. Areas designated for candles and flowers are intentionally arranged to mitigate safety risks, such as fire hazards. This careful planning supports a meaningful environment where personal expressions of grief can be safely observed.

Distinctive details of the Columbarium stand out as visitors navigate the space. The carefully crafted geometry shapes the areas within, allowing light to cast dynamic shadows across the brick surfaces. This interaction not only adds visual interest but also reinforces the contemplative nature of the environment.
