The project explores the concepts of continuity and memory within an architectural space. Located in a tranquil setting, it serves as a refuge for visitors who wish to reflect on life and loss. The design focuses on creating an engaging experience that guides individuals through a journey of contemplation, allowing for deep emotional connections.

Circulation Path

The circulation path is a key feature of the design. It provides a meandering route that encourages exploration and interaction. As visitors walk along this path, they gradually ascend towards the sanctuaries, adding a sense of anticipation. The changes in landscape lead to a central daisy garden, which serves as a spot for quiet reflection. The design protects visitors from outside distractions, enabling them to engage more deeply with their thoughts and memories.

Sanctuaries

Inside the sanctuaries, the layout mimics the path outside. This reinforces the feeling of continuous movement and connection. A mechanical diaphragm simulates the rhythm of breathing, representing the presence of loved ones even in their absence. This unique feature invites visitors to connect with the memories of those they have lost while they navigate through the space.

Columbarium Niches

The columbarium niches are positioned at the highest point of the sanctuaries, combining functionality with visual appeal. This design choice allows these niches to double as seating areas along the sides, creating a place for visitors to pause and reflect. Lighting candles in these spaces adds a layer of intimacy, strengthening the emotional ties between visitors and their memories.

Materiality

Key materials include concrete retaining walls, gravel aggregate, and granite columbarium niches. The retaining walls provide essential structural support and help with drainage, which is important for maintaining the landscape. These elements work together with a central rain garden that uses sustainable solutions to enhance the natural surroundings.

In the midst of this carefully designed environment, the mechanical diaphragm stands out. It breathes in a rhythm that resonates with visitors, serving as a powerful reminder of the connection between life and remembrance.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
