BOUNDLESS is located in Hverfjall, Iceland, serving as a visitor center that connects people with the striking landscape surrounding it. The design focuses on how natural and cultural elements interact, aiming to create a genuine experience for both visitors and locals. The building’s unique shape and layout illustrate a thoughtful response to the terrain and the environment.

Design Concept

The building's circular form is key to its identity. It wraps around four large boulders, showing a blend of the natural world and human-made structure. This shape helps the building sit low to the ground, which reduces its impact on the landscape. The outer shell is made of transparent materials, allowing light to enter while also offering views into the activities happening inside. It fosters a visual connection between the interior and the outside.

Spatial Configuration

Inside, the layout is open and fluid. There are minimal walls, which encourage movement and interaction among guests. The design includes four central cores that vary in size, allowing for different uses throughout the space. These cores contain essential functions such as a reception area, exhibition space, café, restrooms, and an observatory. This arrangement caters to a wide range of visitor needs and enhances the overall experience.

Materials and Sustainability

The materials used in the construction are steel and concrete. These materials were chosen for their strength and durability, suitable for the harsh weather conditions of the region. The project emphasizes sustainability as well, with features such as a foundation that captures rainwater. A filtering system is in place to maintain a sustainable water cycle. Additionally, hydronic radiant floor heating ensures that the interior remains comfortable while reducing energy use.

Architectural Detailing

Entry points cut into each corner of the building serve as welcoming thresholds for visitors. These openings not only help with accessibility but also frame views of the landscape, enhancing the connection to the surroundings. Inside, the play of light and shadow creates an inviting atmosphere. Careful placement of seating and polished surfaces helps to make the space feel warm and engaging. This attention to detail contributes to a visitor experience that encourages relaxation and reflection, making BOUNDLESS a distinctive destination in Hverfjall.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
