Birefringent Acrylic Towers Merging Light and Dark in Icelandic Landscape

Project in-detail

Composed of birefringent acrylic and cast-in-place concrete, the towers seamlessly blend into the Icelandic landscape, inviting visitors to explore the contrasts of light and dark through a dynamic architectural experience.
5 key facts about this project
01
Two towers represent the duality of Ice and Fire.
02
The suspension bridge adjusts to tectonic movements.
03
Birefringent acrylic creates unique light effects in the light tower.
04
The dark tower mimics Iceland's natural basalt formations.
05
Visitor journey emphasizes the contrast between sunlight and shadow.

"Dagr og Nótt" is situated in the distinct environment of Iceland, designed to represent the theme of duality through its exploration of opposites. The architecture illustrates the contrast between Ice and Fire, reflecting the island’s unique geological features. Two towers connect through a suspension bridge that adjusts itself, creating a dynamic relationship between the structures. Each tower provides a different experience for visitors, inviting engagement with the natural surroundings.

Design Concept

The concept behind "Dagr og Nótt" revolves around the interplay of light and dark. The dark tower welcomes visitors into a calm and quiet space, where soft lighting encourages reflection. In contrast, the light tower offers broad views that emphasize openness and connection to the landscape outside. This thoughtful transition between the two spaces symbolizes the movement between opposing states, reinforcing the theme of duality deeply rooted in the project.

Geological Context

Important to the design is its connection to Iceland’s geological characteristics, particularly the active tectonic landscape. The suspension bridge serves a significant role; it can self-adjust its length in response to movement in the ground below. This innovative functionality connects the structure to the natural environment, showing how the design integrates with the geological activity of the site, creating a dialogue between nature and construction.

Material Selection

Material choices throughout the project are carefully considered. The dark tower uses cast-in-place concrete, reflecting the natural basalt formations found throughout Iceland. This choice speaks to the area's geological history. The light tower, however, incorporates molten acrylic, designed to create interesting optical effects similar to the natural birefringence of calcite, a mineral well-known in the region. These materials enhance the visual experience while providing a tangible connection to the land.

Visitor Journey

Navigating through "Dagr og Nótt" offers an evolving visitor experience that highlights the contrasts between light and dark. Guests transition from the introspective atmosphere of the dark tower to the expansive views of the light tower, heightening their awareness of the surrounding landscape. Natural light is an important part of this experience, encouraging visitors to appreciate Iceland’s unique climatic variations.

The design culminates in an observation platform atop the light tower, where stunning views unfold. Here, visitors can take in the dramatic Icelandic landscape and connect with the natural beauty that surrounds them.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
