The Forest Nest is a design project that explores the connection between human experiences and nature. Set in a tranquil environment, it functions as a memorial space, honoring the legacies of those who have passed. The design concept is rooted in the symbolism of a nest, which signifies safety and the idea of growth. This theme guides the creation of a columbarium, designed to help visitors engage in remembrance and foster emotional bonds.

Symbolism and Concept

The design embodies the idea of a nest as a safe place that nurtures life until it can thrive independently. This concept informs the columbarium, which provides a sacred space for loved ones to connect with their memories meaningfully. The environment encourages contemplation and supports the emotional journey of remembrance.

Central Feature

A striking element of the design is the central birch tree, which serves as a living symbol of human life stages: birth, growth, death, and rebirth. This tree acts as a focal point, linking the columbarium to the surrounding landscape. It reinforces the themes of life cycles and continuity that run throughout the design.

Memorial Chapel Pavilion

At the entrance, a memorial chapel pavilion offers visitors a welcoming transition space. This area allows for quiet reflection before entering the memorial. The pavilion enhances the experience of connection, bridging the internal act of remembrance with the broader landscape outside.

Materiality

Although specific materials are not detailed, the design emphasizes the use of organic and found materials. This approach reflects a commitment to integrating the built environment with natural elements. It enhances the sensory experience of the space and strengthens the symbolic connections to nature and the cycles of life.

The birch tree at the center of the columbarium continuously reminds visitors of life's seasons, creating a connection to nature that complements the overall memorial experience.
