The Myvatn Greenhouse project in Iceland is an architectural development designed as a multifunctional space that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Located east of the village of Reykjahlíð, this facility responds to both the functional needs of visitors and the climatic challenges presented by the region. The project serves multiple roles, including a restaurant, restrooms, and multipurpose spaces, all constructed to enhance visitor engagement with the unique landscape of the Myvatn area.

Evolving from the notion of a greenhouse, the architecture emphasizes sustainability and environmental compatibility. Notably, it harnesses natural light and ventilation, creating a comfortable internal environment while promoting plant growth. By employing local materials and incorporating vegetation into its design, the project aligns with ecological stewardship and sustainable practices.

Unique Aspects of the Design

One distinguishing feature of the Myvatn Greenhouse project is the extensive use of glass in its structures, particularly in the greenhouse restaurant. This design choice is fundamental to creating a bright, inviting atmosphere while allowing diners to experience outdoor views. The incorporation of truss systems provides structural integrity without compromising aesthetic appeal, enabling open and spacious interiors.

Furthermore, the project utilizes a “Green Path” concept for circulation within the site, promoting visitor movement while respecting existing natural features. This pathway not only enhances accessibility to various components of the development but also encourages interaction with both built and natural environments.

Functionality and User Experience

The Myvatn Greenhouse is designed to cater to diverse activities. The multipurpose hall allows for community events and yoga sessions, integrating social spaces that foster interaction. The layout considers both group gatherings and individual experiences, making it adaptable for various uses. The restroom facilities are strategically positioned to accommodate the flow of visitors, contributing to overall site efficiency.

The restaurant is particularly noteworthy with its emphasis on communal dining. Long tables promote family-style meals, while the integration of herbs and vegetables into the dining experience connects patrons to the greenhouse concept. This feature highlights the commitment to local food sourcing and sustainability.

For those interested in the specifics of the Myvatn Greenhouse project, further exploration of the architectural plans and designs offers deeper insights into its innovative design approaches and practical applications. A review of the architectural sections will shed light on the technical intricacies of the structures, enhancing understanding of how thoughtful design can coexist with nature.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
