Biomimetic Structure Crafted From Wood Lattice With Integrated Birdwatching Decks

Project in-detail

Crafted from a dynamic wood lattice, this biomimetic observatory integrates seamless observation decks for immersive birdwatching experiences within a natural landscape.
5 key facts about this project
01
Crafted from a lightweight wood lattice, the structure offers optimal ventilation while maintaining structural integrity.
02
The design incorporates observation decks at varying heights, enhancing views and encouraging exploration of the surrounding landscape.
03
Vacuum formed polystyrene is used to create seamless, organic curves that mimic the shape of avian forms.
04
Natural materials, including charred wooden shingles, are employed to blend the structure into the environment effectively.
05
Community spaces are thoughtfully integrated, promoting interaction among visitors while maintaining zones for solitude.

### Overview
The project *Fleeting Nature* focuses on the intersection of architecture and the natural environment, examining the relationship between human beings and avian life through the medium of birdwatching. Situated in a context conducive to biodiversity, the design serves both as an observatory and a platform for engaging with the surrounding landscape, reflecting on the transient moments of connection between humanity and nature.

### Spatial and Material Strategy
The structure features an organic form reminiscent of a tree, establishing a biomimetic relationship with the habitat. Key design elements include a wood lattice that ensures structural integrity and airflow, alongside tensioned metal rods that reinforce the framework while enhancing visual dynamics. Smooth, vacuum-formed polystyrene surfaces echo the contours of bird bodies and feathers, providing an aesthetic alignment with the natural world.

The integration of observation decks and dynamic pathways allows for varied user experiences, facilitating both intimate exploration and broader vistas of the landscape. Elevated spaces encourage users to engage closely with their environment, while maintaining areas for communal interaction and reflection on the ephemeral nature of wildlife. The thoughtful arrangement of walkways emphasizes the fluid movement throughout the structure, mirroring the flight patterns of birds and enhancing the overall experience of birdwatching.

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
