Inspired by *Nicotiana suaveolens*, showcasing nature's influence in design.

NOCTURNAL explores the connection between light and nature. It integrates the idea of bioluminescence into its design, creating a building that illuminates at night. Located in an area focused on sustainable innovation, the building serves public and private functions. The overall design concept draws directly from plants that naturally glow, influencing both the form of the building and how people experience it.

Bioluminescent Inspiration

The design draws lessons from engineered tobacco plants that emit light through a biological process. These plants convert caffeic acid into luciferin, resulting in a natural luminescence. In the project, this concept is translated into a structure that can glow in the dark. This unique feature not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates an environment that shifts with time, engaging those who use it.

Sliding Petals and Spatial Dynamics

A striking feature is the sliding petals, which react to sunlight and shadow throughout the day. They provide shade when needed and enhance brightness at night. The configuration includes both public gathering spaces and private retreats, allowing users to connect with one another or find solitude as they prefer. Outdoor areas blend with greenery, creating a balance between community and personal space.

Light-Mitigating Structures

Sun tunnels and solar tubes enhance the building by maximizing natural light. Skylights are placed to increase brightness inside and offer views of the sky. These elements are not just functional; they add interest to the architecture. The design emphasizes light as an integral part of the structure, making the building a vibrant space to inhabit.

Material Choices and Architectural Elements

The roof, made primarily of glass, is a crucial feature, allowing for transparency and light flow. This choice reflects an intention toward sustainability, enabling the structure to use natural light effectively. The glass creates a special atmosphere, making the interior feel connected to the outside. At night, the glowing structure stands out against the dark sky, presenting a bold interaction between architecture and nature.

The incorporation of bioluminescence into the building design offers a fresh perspective on how light and space can work together. The project emphasizes the relationship between the natural environment and human habitation, creating a unique place that evolves throughout the day and night. With each moment, the spaces within come alive through light, inviting exploration and connection.

MICROHOME 10: Celebrating Small-Scale Living with €100,000 Prize Fund and Kingspan’s Innovation

`
Competition organisers

The MICROHOME 10 competition invites participants to submit visionary designs for off-grid, modular microhomes that push the limits of sustainable, small-scale living. Organised by Buildner in partnership with Kingspan and Hapi Homes, this tenth edition sets the challenge of designing a dwelling for two people within a maximum floor area of 25 m², encouraging bold solutions adaptable to any urban or rural location. The competition continues Buildner’s mission to foster innovative approaches to compact, energy-efficient housing that can address pressing global challenges.

This year’s edition offers a generous total prize fund of €100,000, including the Kingspan Award for designs that integrate high-performance Kingspan products and the Hapi Homes Award for a project selected for real-world construction. In addition to cash prizes, the winners gain international exposure through Buildner’s media partnerships, publications, and a dedicated MICROHOME magazine, further amplifying their ideas to the wider architectural community.

Key dates for MICROHOME 10 include the closing date for registration on 25 September 2025, the submission deadline on 29 October 2025 (11:59 p.m. London time), and the announcement of winners on 9 December 2025. These milestones ensure participants have clear timelines to develop and present their concepts, with early registration discounts available to support students and emerging designers worldwide.
