The Al Wathba Nature Visitors Center is located in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and serves as a place for education and awareness about the reserve's unique biodiversity. The design aims to create a respectful relationship with the surrounding environment. By prioritizing nature in its concept, the center invites visitors to understand and appreciate the landscape.

Architecture and Experience

The design allows for an engaging visitor experience through a series of interconnected spaces. These areas include the Al Wathba House, Display Areas, and Meeting Rooms, all positioned to provide clear views of the wetlands. Paths lead visitors through the building and outside, helping them feel a continuous connection with nature. Each space encourages exploration and learning, making the environment part of the overall journey.

Sustainability and Materials

Sustainability is a central focus of the design, reflected in the materials and construction techniques used. Glulam, a type of laminated wood, is employed for horizontal structural components. This material is treated to ensure it requires less maintenance over time. High thermal mass clay panels are used for the primary casing of the center, enhancing energy efficiency. These material choices support the environmental goals of the center while ensuring long-lasting performance.

Educational Focus

The Biodiversity Academy on the first floor is an essential component of the center's mission. This area is designed to engage visitors through interactive displays that highlight the local ecosystems. It aims to foster a deeper understanding of conservation efforts. By providing educational resources, the academy enhances the overall experience and promotes awareness of the region's rich biodiversity.

Design Details

Throughout the center, paths and visual lines create opportunities for interaction with the surrounding landscape. The spaces are organized to guide visitors along a journey of discovery. Shaded terraces and observation points are integrated into the design, allowing for moments of reflection. These areas enhance the connection to the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, encouraging visitors to engage with the natural world around them.

The Next House: USA — A Global Call to Reimagine the American Suburb

`
Competition organisers

Buildner is launching The Next House: USA, a global architecture competition that challenges architects, designers, and thinkers to reimagine the American suburban home for the 21st century. For decades, the suburban house has symbolized comfort and stability, but today it often reflects excess, isolation, and environmental strain. This competition asks: how can the American home evolve to address climate urgency, economic pressures, and shifting social values?

Participants are tasked with designing a prototype home of no more than 1,500 sq ft (≈140 m²) for a household of two adults and one child. The design should be compact yet generous, adaptable, sustainable, affordable, and replicable across diverse U.S. contexts. More than a design exercise, the competition aims to spark a conversation about how homes can support healthier, smarter, and more connected communities.

The total prize fund is $20,000 USD. The final registration deadline is May 20, 2026, and winners will be announced on September 22, 2026. The Next House: USA invites architects, students, and visionaries worldwide to redefine what the American home means today—and what it should mean tomorrow.
