Balfron Tower, located in Poplar, Tower Hamlets, East London, features a modern residential design. Built in a Brutalist style, the 26-storey building is part of the Brownfield Estate, known for its focus on social housing. The design centers on the idea of residential capsules, which aim to create a blend of private and public spaces, addressing the demands of urban living while promoting a sense of community.

Design Concept

The residential capsule is a key element of the overall design. These modular units are crafted to provide both personal space and opportunities for social interaction. The inspiration for their shape comes from cocoons in nature, symbolizing comfort and community. The capsules reflect a thoughtful approach to urban dwellings, enhancing the lives of residents.

Spatial Configuration

Suspended from a strong steel beam structure, the capsules give an impression of lightness and flexibility. This design allows for easy adjustments and customization of living areas, catering to the changing needs of urban residents. It promotes a balance between individual privacy and shared experiences, helping to foster a feeling of belonging within the community.

Materiality

Biodegradable leather plays an important role in the construction of the capsules. This material combines biopolymers such as cellulose, chitosan, and pectin. The structure has two layers: the top layer features chitosan and cellulose, while the bottom layer uses chitosan and apple pectin. These materials not only support the sustainability goals of the design but also contribute to its overall performance and environmental impact.

Natural Light and Atmosphere

Natural light is a vital part of the design, achieved through open glazed sections within the capsules. These features create a bright and welcoming indoor space while connecting residents to the outside environment. The emphasis on natural light enhances well-being and fosters interaction, contributing to a lively atmosphere where individuality and community coexist.

The adaptability of the capsules extends to their potential for 3D printing, allowing variations in composition, color, and transparency. This flexibility promotes a modern approach to urban living, where individual needs can be met within a shared framework. Each capsule serves as a small, personal space within the larger context of Balfron Tower, providing a practical solution to contemporary challenges in urban housing.
