The Modern Turf House is a new building in Iceland that reinterprets the traditional turf house. Located in a beautiful landscape, it serves several purposes, including a restaurant, a multipurpose hall, and a greenhouse. The design combines old architectural styles with new ideas, creating a place that connects visitors to the surrounding nature.

Design Concept

The structure showcases a fresh take on the familiar shapes of turf houses. Visitors first encounter a bold and engaging building that invites them to explore. The design emphasizes movement and interaction, with spaces that flow into one another, making it easy for people to navigate through the different areas.

Integration of Greenhouse

The greenhouse is an important feature of the building, supporting both practical use and a unique experience. It allows visitors to connect with natural elements, highlighting the project's focus on sustainability. This feature is not just functional; it acts as a central point that brings attention to the relationship between the built environment and nature.

Spatial Organization

The layout is carefully organized to ensure accessibility and ease of movement. It includes a multipurpose hall, dining spaces, and service areas that are interconnected. An outdoor deck expands the usable space, allowing visitors to enjoy the outdoors, while an amphitheater provides a venue for community gatherings and events.

Material Selection

The chosen materials reflect a commitment to eco-friendly design. Cross-laminated timber is used for its strength and sustainability. Stone wool provides effective insulation, enhancing the building’s energy efficiency. Biobased materials are also included, supporting a design approach that aims to reduce environmental impact. This thoughtful selection of materials reinforces the project’s alignment with local context and ecological goals.

Large windows throughout the building allow for plenty of natural light, making the spaces brighter and reducing the need for artificial lighting. The dining areas are positioned to offer views of the surrounding landscape, providing a strong connection between the occupants and the outdoors. This design detail enriches the experience, ensuring that visitors feel a part of the natural setting.
